This short soundtrack marks the first time I have been requested to write entirely using actual orchestral elements. No hint of synths, or retro game sounds. Just real deal orchestral sounds!
Writing for mobile can be a peculiar challenge, due to the fact that the songs themselves need to maintain one snap shot of energy for the entire duration of the track, never ebbing or flowing, while also not having a clear start or ending, and certainly not a crescendo. The idea is that the player can pop in to the track at any moment, ,wrap up the gameplay at breakneck speed, then move to the next screen.
For a musician who has basically hung his hat on writing very dynamic, very technical and wild music, this challenge is one that basically causes me to stop dead in my tracks and rethink, entirely, the process of song writing.
Whereas I would normally just let my instincts dictate where a song should go, with this project I needed to carefully craft my chord progressions and key changes to keep the energy consistent without having the song become dull.
This is my first time getting to put together a digital orchestra, and with fairly stringent requirements for how extreme I was able to go. So please, be kind :)
